How To Homeschool Guide to Homeschooling — Everything You Need To Know To Start Homeschooling Today!

Deciding to homeschool is a very personal decision. Some might choose to homeschool because of a child that has special needs, out of safety concerns, a life event/situation, religion, or many other reasons. Whatever the reason, know that the How To Homeschool Team will be with you throughout it all. We are veteran homeschool parents who are always happy to help any parent who is new to homeschooling. This Guide to Homeschooling should help you get started today!

Now that you’ve chosen to homeschool, the next steps might seem unbelievably overwhelming. There are so many curriculum choices out there and it’s hard to know where to even begin.

There are a few things you need to do in order to start homeschooling, from legal things to choosing a curriculum that best suits your child’s needs.

Let’s get to it, shall we? We hope this Guide to Homeschooling is helpful to you!

  1. It’s OKAY to feel overwhelmed. — First, let me say that I know what it feels like. What you’re feeling right now. When I first started homeschooling, I felt so overwhelmed by the thought of homeschooling and not knowing where to start, that I just didn’t start. We took the kids out of school and didn’t start homeschooling for another month because I was paralyzed. I remember sitting in front of my computer thinking “What have I done?! Am I really going to do this? What is the first step?!”
  2. You need to learn the homeschooling laws in your state. — Since homeschooling is regulated at the state level, you need to research the specific requirements and regulations in your state to find out what steps you need to take in order to legally start homeschooling your kids. We recommend going to the HSLDA website for up-to-date homeschooling laws. https://hslda.org/
  3. Find Support — Find members of your family and friends that will support you. If you don’t have any, find local homeschoolers that will help you through the hard times. You can usually find groups on Facebook, or by Googling your area and the word “homeschool.” Local homeschoolers can serve as a resource to you and your kids through this process. Not only will they know the laws in your area, they can be a good way to get your kids some social time during that first year of homeschooling while you’re still figuring things out.
  4. Explore homeschooling methods & learning styles — One of the most beautiful things about homeschooling is that you get to determine which approach and learning style works for your family and each individual child. In a public or private school setting, that isn’t always an option. That’s why our family loves homeschooling so much. I have an auditory learner and a child who loves hands-on learning. Both are totally different learning styles, but I can adapt each lesson to their needs and they are flourishing in their learning. It’s the most incredible thing to see.
  5. Choose a Curriculum — Don’t get overwhelmed! It’s okay if you choose a curriculum and it doesn’t work right away. You should plan on trying a few different curriculum options before one “sticks.” This can seem overwhelming, but I promise, if you just take your time and try a few different options, you’ll find one that works for your child and your family. My go-to Curriculum providers are below, and I highly recommend any of these options.

Guide to Homeschooling – Tips for Success

  1. Have Fun – Learning doesn’t always have to be serious. Play games, go to the park, field trips, watch movies, etc. Homeschooling does not need to look like traditional school, and we highly encourage you to create your own version of schooling that works for your family.
  2. Be Flexible – Nobody is perfect, and you aren’t going to be a “perfect homeschooler” whatever that means. Give yourself grace. You’re doing this for the first time and your kids will learn a lot by watching how you handle things you don’t know how to do. Call in for help when you need it, and find support for the days you don’t think you can continue on. If you aren’t feeling it today, maybe you’ll feel it tomorrow. You can skip school when you and/or your kids aren’t in a good mood, or when they are tired from the day before. That’s the joy of homeschooling. You can be FLEXIBLE. Just make sure that all of the schoolwork gets done during the “school year” and you’ll be fine. After homeschooling for more than 16 years, I’ve learned that it’s okay to take a week off sometimes. You come back refreshed and ready to conquer the world.
  3. Don’t Compare – Never compare your homeschooling to traditional school, or other homeschooling parents. Every journey is different. Enjoy and trust the process.
  4. Take a Break – Whether you choose to year-around homeschool or take on the traditional school year model where the kids have a “summer break” you still should take breaks every now and then. As I said above, I’ve learned that it’s okay to take a week off sometimes. You come back refreshed and ready to conquer the world. It will help minimize burnout.

Guide to Homeschooling: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How long should we homeschool each day? There is no easy answer. It depends! It depends on your state laws and if they require a certain number of hours. Learning can take place however and wherever you want. The hours of schooling you do does not mean your child’s nose needs to be in a book. It can include P.E., Cooking Classes, Home Economics, Field Trips, etc.
  2. How much does homeschooling cost? It can cost as much or as little as you want or can afford. You can homeschool for free, using sites like Khan Academy or Easy Peasy All In One Homeschool, but it will require more work. You can also use curriculum providers such as Monarch, LIFEPAC, Switched-on-Schoolhouse, Horizons, and more which start at just $33/mo.
  3. What happens if I can’t do it? You can do it! If you decide later on that you don’t want to or that it’s too hard on you, you can choose to hire a tutor to help or you can choose an online program that does most of the teaching for you. You can also choose to enroll your kids back in public or private school. You’ll just need to contact the school you want to enroll in and ask what they will need to show that the kids were schooled at home. They will usually require some sort of transcript, so make sure you keep track of what your kids are learning at home. This is one reason we love using Monarch, LIFEPAC, Switched-on-Schoolhouse, Horizons, Weaver, and other curriculum options like those. They make it easy for any parent who wants their kids to go off to College or to go back to public or private school in the future because all of the scope and sequence for each curriculum is provided, making that transition a lot easier when the time comes.

Picture the Scripture – “Picture the Scripture” is a scripture memory system that enables you to recall any and every chapter in the Bible, using pictures.  Learn more quicker and faster.  Recall any chapter in just seconds.  Exponentially speed up your memorizing ability.  Teach a generation confidence in God through His Word.

Here’s what other’s are saying:

“It’s been very difficult for me in the past to memorize scripture and retain it. Picture the Scripture was a quick easy way for me to memorize one concept or scripture from each chapter. I just completed the New Testament after about a four month period of time. I didn’t work on it every day, but a little each week. I can now recall in every chapter, a verse or concept.” ~ Shari

“I love picture the scripture! It’s such an innovative and creative way to learn more about the Bible. As a first time mom, I want to raise my son to know and memorize scripture. This will be a useful tool to help us both learn more of God’s word. I love that I can see pictures in my mind to help recall something from every chapter in the Bible. I would never be able to accomplish this feat if not for this system! Plus, it’s fun and something the whole family can do together!” ~Kristi

Common Sense Press publishes curricula designed for homeschoolers, traditional schools, and parents who want to enrich their children’s education. With Common Sense Press products, meaningful hands-on activities replace textbook methods that are often detached from the learning process.

For example, the Learning Language Arts through Literature series incorporates spelling, reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing, penmanship, and phonics in the same lesson. Research shows that language arts taught in this way is much more effective than when taught in the traditional isolated and fragmented manner.

Before being published, all of Common Sense Press’ products must pass two tests. First, because a homeschool mom’s life can be very busy, they publish materials that are complete and require a minimum of planning. Second, they believe that education is more than just getting the right answer on a multiple-choice test. Learning should be meaningful, comprehensive, and stimulating to the student.

Character Concepts – CharacterConcepts.com grew out of the day-to-day life of Rick and Marilyn Boyer. The Boyers wanted their fourteen children to have fun-to-use, Bible-based character training materials but couldn’t find an organized character curriculum. So they designed fun projects to teach character lessons from Scripture. As time went on, they began to combine their ideas into an age-appropriate curriculum so that other parents could have the benefit of their experience. Now, the Character Concepts Curriculum and the Boyers’ large selection of parenting and home schooling books and recordings give parents the hands-on tools to train up “kids of character!”

With Starfall, children have fun while learning in an environment of collaboration, wonderment, and play. We teach through positive reinforcement to ensure children become confident, intrinsically motivated, and successful.

Starfall’s founder Stephen Schutz never forgot his childhood struggle to read. As an adult, he was naturally motivated to create a resource to help children like himself. The Starfall website opened on August 27, 2002. The concept was to create an environment “Where Children Have Fun Learning to Read.” The website was offered to the public completely free. Starfall then expanded to become a fully developed kindergarten English and Language Arts curriculum and a comprehensive pre-K curriculum. Over the years the Starfall website’s offerings have grown in the number of songs, books, and mathematics activities extending to second grade.

Drawing on History is an interactive, art lesson approach to art history and art appreciation. This unique art curriculum is designed and written for homeschool or independent study high school students and covers one-year of fine art credits. The student will get an overview of many of the major art movements from Romanticism of the 1830s to Psychedelic art of the 1960s with inspiring art projects and instruction. Each student will gain a basic understanding of what was happening in the art world during major events in history. Art can be a very effective tool for studying the history. The artist is a lot like a historian, but in a visual way.

Fascinating Education is an online high school science site with courses in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, and Logic of Medicine. Dr. Margulies, a neurologist, understands the brain and how we learn. He flips the teaching process by approaching science through the “right hemisphere” of the brain. By using simple, colorful illustrations – supplemented with attached audio files – Dr. Margulies creates an easy way to learn science.
Each curriculum provides a roadmap so that students understand why they are learning each topic and how they can apply this knowledge to their everyday life. Lessons begin with an everyday observation, then Dr. Margulies asks why that happens. The answer to his question generally elicits another question. The process is repeated one step at a time, in simple English, without terms of art.
The net result of Dr. Margulies’ approach is an efficient and effective way to learn science!

College Prep Genius is an award-winning program that teaches students how to ace the SAT and PSAT. The test-taking techniques have also been successfully used on the ACT and CLT. These are logic tests, not content-based tests and questions can be answered in 3 seconds or less. Students are taught that these standardized tests have standardized questions and answers and can be beat by learning the recurring patterns found on each test.

Most students bomb these tests because the questions are purposely misleading and wrong answers are tricky and require a critical thinking approach. Once students internalize the strategies, shortcuts and techniques, and practice correctly, they can become trained test-takers and beat these tests.

Tens of thousands of students all across the USA and several countries have been through the class and raise their scores exponentially. The program can be accessed via online eCourses, virtual boot camps and in-person classes.

PE Activities for Homeschool Students

Regular exercise can work wonders for children. It builds strong bones and muscles, enhances cardiorespiratory fitness, controls weight, improves focus, and helps reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. It’s also been shown to reduce the risk of things like cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Regular physical activity has many benefits, so it’s no surprise that most experts recommend that children ages 6 to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day and that can be a challenge, especially with kids who aren’t as naturally active. It’s also been particularly challenging thanks to COVID. With kids stuck inside and our lives in a state of constant upheaval, just getting dressed and knocking out a couple of lessons can be a major achievement.

That’s why we decided to create a guide for physical activities for kids at home. Whether you’re a homeschooling parent or a teacher whose students have moved to online courses, we’ve got you covered with an idea that will help you implement physical education at home.

Ideas for PE Activities at Home

We dug through PE ideas from exercise gurus, seasoned homeschoolers, and pandemic parents to bring you the best, most practical, and most joy-filled ideas for getting your kids moving, happy, and healthy.

Make an Activity Jar

Take an empty mason jar and fill it with ideas for activities. When your kids need a wiggle break, have them reach in the jar and pull out an activity challenge. Here are a few ideas that you can put in your activity jar:

*Do a handstand

*Jump rope

*Have a 15-minute hide-and-seek session

*Hold a plank for 1 minute

*Do 50 jumping jacks

*Have a crab walk race

*Invent a dance

*Imitate 7 animals (including sound and movement)

*Do 50 sit-ups

*Do lunges to your room and back

It’s a good idea to let the kids come up with most of the ideas for activities; there’s a better chance they’ll want to do them when they pull them out of the jar.

Some clever parents even incorporate chores into the activity jar like:

*Washing the car

*Walking the dog

*Cleaning the windows

*Sweeping/vacuuming

*Gathering the laundry

*Doing a quick pick up

Of course, these might require some incentivizing. Consider making a separate rewards jar for when your kids pull a productive activity (ahem, chore).

Use Videos

Those who were alive during the 1918 flu pandemic didn’t have workout channels on YouTube, so we’ve got that going for us. They’re an almost-inexhaustible resource for exercise. Need a 5-minute, full-body strength workout for kids? There’s a video for it. Want a 30-minute Pilates-based exercise the whole family can do? You’ll find one in 30 seconds flat. Want one that incorporates dance or has a goofy cartoon character? It might take some searching, but it’s there. Technology has so many benefits when it comes to learning, so why not use technology in your PE activities at home?

The ubiquity of kid workout videos is a blessing, to be sure. But it also means everyone and their mother has a workout video and quality can vary. Be sure you’re using reputable videos from people and channels that understand the types of exercises and activities that are appropriate for your students’ age group.

Chair Aerobics

When you see your students are getting restless, take a 15-minute break for some chair aerobics. Without even getting up, they can do bike pedaling, chair jacks, chair running, power holds, and healthy stretches. Or, you can have them get up and use the chair for more advanced exercises like dips, step-ups, toe taps, squats, and more.

If you’re not sure what will work, the internet is full of ideas for chair exercises for kids, complete with handy printouts, instructional videos, and complete routines.

Pump Up the Jams

Some kids can get motivated to move just by turning on some upbeat music. Whether it’s dancing, doing air guitar, or belting out their best Taylor Swift impression, music has a way of lighting a spark. And playing music during a workout doesn’t just help with boredom. Studies have found some incredible workout-boosting benefits for kids — the right jams can increase endorphins, promote metabolic efficiency, increase endurance, and raise the heart rate.

Here’s an idea — sit down with your kids and have them make a playlist of tunes that get them going.

Get Outside

Almost anywhere you are in the country, there are places you can go to experience nature and get active. If your town has a greenway, a family walk can help your kids expend energy and refocus. If there’s a park or field nearby, a soccer ball, football, gloves and baseballs, frisbees, or any cheap sports equipment can be the ticket to healthy, fun exercise sessions.

Hikes are also a fantastic way to combine the peaceful benefits of nature with some vigorous cardio.

Make Indoor Games

Of course, it’s not always convenient or even possible to go spend an hour outside every day. That’s okay — there are plenty of ways to make sure your kids get their sweat on indoors. Here are a few ideas:

__Painter’s Tape__

Nondestructive and oh-so-versatile painter’s tape can be used to make a hopscotch court or in a wealth of fun, active games (look up Best Foot Forward, First Things First, Whatcha Doin, and Wave Relays).

__Simon Says__

Simon Says can be turned into a cardio game pretty easily. As an indoor game, you can have your students/kids do jumping jacks, push-ups, standing on one foot, and shaking their bodies.

__Charades__

Charades hits that sweet spot between physical activity, competition, and silliness. And there are all sorts of variations to keep it interesting: sports charades, movie charades, animal charades, emoji charades, and so on. Although not a strict exercise, it still gets kids up and moving.

__The Floor is Lava__

It’s an oldie but a goodie. Put down pillows, towels, or shoes and have kids try to navigate from one side of the house to the other without touching the floor.

__Fitness Bingo__

You can also have a game of fitness bingo where you draw cards that instruct your students/kids to do push-ups, burpees, mountain climbers, jumping rope, or running in place. The first kid to mark off all their squares wins.

Video Games

We’ll give you a second to recover from your spit take. There.

So, video games don’t have to be a brain-dead, zoned-out, couch-potato activity. In fact, over the last decade, the video game industry has developed all sorts of games and equipment that make exercise more fun than it has any right being. It’s called exergaming and it’s an awesome way to get in those 60 minutes of moderate activity.

Some video games do it on the sly by using dance or sports competitions (like baseball or tennis) to get kids moving. Others are designed explicitly for exercise and even come with equipment like rings, punching bags, and smart mats.

Consider a PE Curriculum

Many educational organizations offer well-thought-out, pre-made homeschool physical education lesson plans that take the guesswork out of PE. Some do cost something, either a one-time expense or a monthly fee, but they can be worth it for parents and teachers who are busy or don’t have the time or energy to design their own physical activities for kids at home.

Tips for Implementing PE at Home

Encouraging physical fitness in kids can start habits that will keep them healthy long into adulthood. Yet, creating exercise habits can be a challenge, so here are some ways to make it easier.

#Make a Routine and Be Consistent

To make physical activity habitual, experts recommend creating an exercise plan and sticking to it. Making an exercise calendar can help — it’ll give parents, teachers, and kids a clear understanding of how PE will fit into their day. Once you have convenient times set up, you stay consistent with them, even when you don’t feel like it.

#Set Clear Goals

Having clear, achievable goals adds an element of challenge to exercising, which is a great way to keep them motivated. If it’s running, add a little more distance to each run every week. Or, go for faster times. If it’s a workout routine, set a goal that adds 1-2 extra reps each week.

#Be a Role Model

If your kids/students see that you’re having fun being physically active, they’re far more likely to follow suit. In fact, getting the whole family involved is one of the most successful and sustainable ways to maintain exercise habits.

#Focus on the Fun

Forget about “no pain, no gain” — never lose sight of the idea that physical fitness should be fun. If it’s becoming a chore, don’t be afraid to completely change it up!

#Incorporate Rewards

Rewards are a great way to give your kids a pat on the back for a job well done (and it trains the brain to keep going). These can be internal rewards — like noticing the good feelings that exercise brings — or external rewards, like movie nights, TV time, or healthy food treats for meeting a weekly exercise goal.

A Comprehensive Homeschool Curriculum Includes Coding

A Comprehensive Homeschool Curriculum Includes Coding

As homeschoolers, our curriculum choices seem endless, activities plentiful, and our days just too short. Once we have the all-important core subjects covered, we have the luxury and the daunting task of rounding out our children’s days in ways that will satisfy their interests now and build a solid platform for their future. Millions of families annually choose coding as a way to enrich their children’s educational experience and give them life skills for what comes next.

Why are so many families seeking coding instruction for their kids and why are kids so excited about coding? More importantly, when your homeschooler expresses an interest in learning to code, why make the choice for coding instruction over other curriculum options?

Learning to Code is Fun

First and foremost, learning to code is fun!

“In a recent survey 54% of students said they enjoyed Computer Science and Engineering the most [among the subjects they were learning]. Only Art and Design and Performing Arts ranked higher.”

―Code.org

Coding offers the sheer joy that comes from making things, the fascination of solving puzzles and problems, the pleasure of making something useful, and the delight of learning. Learning to code offers kids the opportunity to experience all this and more. When learning to code, kids take an idea, map it out, build it, make it real, and make it work.

Coding Teaches Problem Solving Skills

All coding projects start with solving a problem. Whether it’s bringing an idea to life, improving how something works, or fixing something that’s broken, every coding project involves problem solving. As with many things in life, code doesn’t always work as expected on the first try. When that happens, it’s try, try again. But kids learning to code don’t simply try random fixes, one after the other, until something works. They learn a more elegant approach. Kids who code learn to use a problem-solving framework and implement the right fix.

In the process, they experience real word problem solving and develop skills that transfer to other challenges and situations.

Coding Teaches Logical Reasoning Skills

Coding classes for kids give them a mental workout. While learning the problem-solving framework provides kids with a process, learning logical thinking provides them with the critical reasoning skills needed to successfully use that framework.

Being able to approach problem solving logically enables kids who code to approach problem solving in a disciplined manner and create more effective solutions.

Having logical thinking skills encourages kids to think for themselves, to question assumptions, to develop their own theories, and to test their theories against known facts. These thinking skills are transferable to all situations.

Coding Teaches Attention to Detail

Coding projects are complex, requiring lots of individual steps. To be successful kids who code must adopt a detail-minded approach. Attention to detail, especially in the design phase where the essence of what’s required is defined. With attention to detail not only is it possible to make something work, but it can also lead to creating a thing of beauty.

Code doesn’t always work as expected on the first try. When this happens kids who code, must take a detail-minded approach to debugging their code. This type of approach supports a thorough application of the problem-solving framework. The ability to be thorough and accurate when working through tasks is a valuable skill in just about every endeavor. Coding classes for kids nurture their attention to detail.

Coding Teaches Abstract and Strategic Thinking

Through abstract thinking kids begin to understand more than just what is physically in front of them. With abstract thinking kids can conceive of new things and ideas. They can consider what is possible. The ability to think in the abstract and create is an important prerequisite for being able to learn to code. Much of how code is structured, and works is abstract and cannot be easily represented in a concrete or physical manner. To truly understand many coding projects, kids need to conceptualize the problem and its solution in the abstract.

Strategic thinking makes it possible to see and understand a whole idea, all its parts, and how they are connected. Strategic thinking also leads to understanding the vision and purpose behind the project.

Kids who learn to code learn how to think strategically. Every programming problem is looked at as a whole, as a collection of its various pieces, and in the context of the bigger picture. This approach can uncover leverage points for kids to exploit and it helps kids understand the effects of their coding project on the larger environment. It also helps them to connect with the vision and purpose of the project and experience being mission-driven.

Strategic thinking is valuable in every problem-solving situation, because with strategic thinking kids can see the bigger picture and anticipate the effect of their actions.

Coding Gives Kids a Way to Express Their Creativity

There is no one right answer when solving programming problems. Solving programming problems requires creativity.

Every programming problem has more than one solution. Every programmer can choose among different approaches to get to a solution. Because of this, kids who learn to code are called upon to be creative. They must conceptualize how their code will work and what the result will be. Often the solution brings together many smaller pieces to create a unique whole.

Using a creative approach opens kids’ minds to new possibilities and forces them to consider alternative approaches. Developing these skills gives kids the resilience needed to respond to the challenges presented by our ever-changing world.

Having Coding Skills Can Lead to a High-paying Job

More and more aspects of our everyday life are becoming automated. As this happens, the supply gap for people with coding skills continues to grow.

It’s estimated that as many as 1 million jobs will go unfilled over the next decade because workers won’t have the necessary coding skills.

“Roughly half of the jobs in the top income quartile — defined as those paying $57,000 or more per year — are in occupations that commonly require applicants to have at least some computer coding knowledge or skill, according to an analysis of 26 million U.S. online job postings…”

— Heatstreet, Half of the Highest-Paying Jobs in America Now Require You to Know How to CodeJune 22, 2016

That doesn’t mean that everyone will be working as a coder. There will be plenty of well-paid jobs that don’t directly involve coding.

Coding Experience Helps College Applicants Stand Out

The college application process is highly competitive. In a sea of outstanding applicants how can anyone demonstrate the “exceptional talent” needed to get into the college of their choice? One way is to study coding and build a portfolio of coding projects. A coding portfolio provides the admissions officer tangible evidence of the applicant’s problem-solving skills, creativity, and work ethic.

Not sure if learning to code will be useful? According to the College Board, studying computer science is good preparation for 48 different college majors—not all of them have to do with science or technology. They include Business Administration, Geology, Linguistics, Studio Arts, and Zoology. Of course, studying code is good preparation for a technology degree as well, whether it’s in Database Management, Software Engineering, or Robotics.

For those kids who do go on to study computer science their prospects for finding a well-paid job at graduation are very good.

“A computer science major can earn 40% more than the college average. According to Brookings [Institute] a computer science major’s lifetime earnings are $1.67M versus $1.19M of a college graduate and $0.58M of a high school graduate.”

Summer Jobs & Internships Value Skills Learned While Coding

Kids who learn to code have in-demand skills when it comes to getting a summer job or internship. They know how to do more than stand at a cash register and take someone’s lunch order.

Even if the summer job or internship doesn’t directly involve coding, employers are looking for kids who have strong communications skills and can work as part of a team. Kids learn these and other skills while learning to code.

Coding Instruction Provides an Opportunity for Unique In-home Learning

As a homeschooling parent, you are sold on coding, but that skill is a little outside of your wheelhouse. Luckily, the range of coding education solutions is extensive.

Coding toys and games are a fun way to start. There are also apps, websites, camps, group classes, and personal tutors teaching coding for kids. Of course, it’s important to opt for the approach that works best for your child’s learning style.

If your child is ready to become truly proficient at coding, an online coding school can be an especially good choice. A small group, live, online method of instruction not only delivers a thorough understanding of coding, but can also help to introduce homeschooled students to different teaching styles, work deadlines, and goals, all while at home. It develops independence, confidence, and collaboration too. This virtual opportunity can help prepare homeschooled students for college and jobs as they successfully navigate coding and schooling in the digital world.

You chose homeschooling for a variety of reasons: to encourage your child’s love of learning, to tailor their education to their learning style, and to provide a challenging, individualized education. But as your child gets older you realize that you might not be able to provide for all of their needs. For example, what happens when your child wants to learn something you are unfamiliar with, like coding, and you have never coded anything in your life. How do you stay connected with their work and track their progress when you have no reference point? You want to be involved and lead their education, but there’s no need for homeschooling parents to go it alone. Thankfully, there are many methods you can try and helpful sources that you can seek out when you don’t feel completely comfortable teaching your child a specific subject all by yourself.

Learn together

There’s no shame in telling your child that you don’t know something. Sure, maybe you shouldn’t tell your 10-year-old that you’ve forgotten how to do long division – brush up on that skill ahead of that lesson! But if your child wants to pursue painting for their art lessons, and you don’t know the difference between oils and acrylics, why not learn together? It’s the perfect excuse to follow along to a Bob Ross video and listen to his encouragement, advising that anyone can learn how to paint. Not only will your child have the opportunity to explore a new interest, but they will learn a valuable lesson that it’s never too late to challenge yourself and learn something new.

Pool your resources

We all have different strengths and weaknesses, and there is probably a lot of untapped talent among your friends or other homeschooling parents you know. You might love algebra but dread trying to teach physics. Offer your help to another homeschooling parent in exchange for their expertise in a subject that gives you trouble. Or what if you are trying to teach a history lesson, but you’re having trouble making it meaningful for your child? Maybe you have an older relative who can share their experiences of living through a specific historical event. And what if your high school student is interested in architecture and you don’t know the first thing about the occupation? Your architect neighbor might be willing to talk to your child about the skills they use at work, and what their day-to-day schedule looks like.

Supplement with online classes

Every topic imaginable is available on the internet to study, so why not take advantage of the benefits of the 21st century and find an online class to fill in the gaps in your child’s education? One of the most fascinating topics for children is technology as it relates to gaming. Technology surrounds us, and it’s natural if a child is interested in how it works and wants to learn how to code. Most of us use technology on a daily basis, but how many people understand it well or can teach it? An online coding class for kids is the perfect way to teach important technology and problem-solving skills. Coding classes specifically designed for kids introduce complex topics in simple ways and connect the technology to the things that interest kids the most. Perfect! But how do you connect with your child and follow along with the online class when you don’t know the first thing about coding? Our Coding 101 guide is a great starting point for learning some coding terminology and broad concepts so you can ask the online teacher questions, understand the progress reports, and share your enthusiasm with your child.

Hire a tutor

What if you generally feel secure in your knowledge of a subject, but your child is asking more detailed questions than you can answer? Or you’ve hit the limit of your knowledge and they are moving ahead of you? You probably know many ways to teach multiplication, but now that your child is studying trigonometry, the part of your brain that once held information about sine, cosine, and tangent is a bit covered in dust. It might be worthwhile to find a tutor in that subject who can push beyond the basics and provide more challenging content. A tutor’s love of the subject might be what your child needs to encourage them to continue past what you can provide. Choose a tutor who enjoys working with children and with whom your child feels comfortable. Take the opportunity to ask questions about your child’s progress and get another opinion on your child’s learning style. You might gain some valuable insight that you can use to expand your teaching repertoire.

Find a community college class

This can be a great opportunity for older homeschooled kids to get a taste of college, and to possibly earn college credit while still in high school. Local universities or community colleges offer a variety of classes with experts in every field, so your child can dive deeper into a topic that interests them. It might serve as a good transitioning plan as well since homeschooling can’t last forever. Use this opportunity not only as a supplement for a subject you can’t teach alone but as a means of having your child take more responsibility for the path of their own education. Ask your child questions about their decision to choose the specific course, how they feel in a different educational setting, and how this might influence the type of university or college they decide to attend in the future. And of course, ask them details about the subject too!

Teach your child how to learn

The common old adage tells us: if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach a man how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. As a homeschooling parent, you aren’t just passing along some information to memorize and repeat; you are giving your child the skills necessary to learn how to think critically and apply their skills to any problem they face in the future.  And learning how to find information is just as important as learning the information itself. Teach your child how to find books at the library, how to effectively search the internet, and how to decide if a resource is a good choice. These research strategies will serve them well and you might just find that your child has learned something without your help. Continue to encourage their independent learning by asking them to teach you what they learned. This can work at any age. Young children love to “stump the teacher” with difficult questions, while older children will build their confidence and their love of learning by explaining things to you that you don’t know.

You can’t know everything, but luckily you don’t need to. Take advantage of all the tools at your disposal to make the most of your child’s education. Look online, in your community, and among your friends. Homeschooling isn’t about eschewing any outside help; homeschooling is about choosing what is best for your child to maximize their learning potential and make their education meaningful. Whatever source you choose to help you teach, remember to stay connected to their progress by following along, asking questions, and educating yourself.

Coding 101 for the Homeschooling Parent

Coding 101 for the Homeschooling Parent

So your child is learning coding for kids, and suddenly it sounds like they are speaking a foreign language. What do they mean by Scratch? What does coffee (Java) and a snake (Python) have to do with programming? And all the acronyms: UI, API, CSS, HTML – what do they mean and how do they keep them all straight? Read on to learn all about Coding 101 for the homeschooling parent!

Never fear! Our Coding 101 overview will bring you up to speed on some key points in technology so you can understand your child’s work, feel comfortable asking them questions, and give them encouragement to continue. Here are some terms that you might hear as they progress through their courses.

Coding 101 for the Homeschooling Parent – HTML/CSS

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are the building blocks of a website. HTML is the code that describes the structure of the page while CSS is the code that describes the presentation of the page. How do these work together?

In HTML, you create elements and tags. CSS uses properties and values to specify what to do with the elements in the HTML. For example, a paragraph is identified with the HTML <p> element. All content between these tags, <p> and </p>, is considered to be one paragraph.

<p>This is my paragraph. It has three sentences. This is the last sentence.</p>

By using CSS, you can control what this basic structure looks like for all elements with the same tag.

p {

  color: green;

  font-size: 14px;

  font-style: italic;

}

The CSS code above makes the paragraph look like this:

This is my paragraph. It has three sentences. This is the last sentence.

Simple, right? Obviously, this is just the start. CSS has a robust ability to control almost every element in HTML. CSS Zen Garden shows the beautiful power of CSS. Your imagination is the only limitation.

JavaScript

If HTML is the structure, and CSS is the style, then JavaScript is the dynamic element. It is a scripting language that is usually client-side, which means it runs in the browser and does not connect to a database. JavaScript can collect data in a form, store variables, and trigger an event when a button is clicked. Use JavaScript to create a form that converts feet to meters, a tip calculator, a quiz, or use it to change the action of your mouse on screen.

JavaScript can also connect to APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), which are pre-built blocks of code that allow computer programs to communicate. The Geolocation API allows Google maps to display where you are located. The Canvas API can be used for animation and game graphics. You can even use APIs to display your Twitter feed on your website.  We’ll get back to APIs later.

Coding 101 for the Homeschooling Parent – Scratch

While JavaScript is relatively easy to learn and can be used to create animations and games, starting with a program like Scratch is easier for younger kids, and fun for any age.

So no, your child isn’t talking about being itchy! Scratch has a bright, drag-and-drop interface that teaches children powerful programming concepts like variables, loops, and conditionals. It is a visual programming language developed by MIT Media Lab and is used in over 150 countries and is available in over 40 languages. It uses event-driven programming, with the flow of action following events triggered by the user. Kids can very easily code an action and see the effects right away. Learning to use Scratch doesn’t only build coding skills; it is a powerful tool for integrating creativity across the curriculum.

Python

Python is a server-side programming language. Where JavaScript keeps things on the client-side, without connecting to a database or storing data longer than the browser is open, Python allows you to build applications and save data across sessions, like usernames, passwords, and scores in a game.

Python is easy to read and understand so it’s a great starting point for kids. It is a high-level language, which means it uses natural language elements, and it is faster to write code in Python than in many other languages. It has a simple, consistent syntax and a large standard library, which is a set of prewritten code for performing functions. No need to reinvent the wheel with every program. It can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Since the syntax of Python is relatively easy to learn, your child can focus more on learning how to think like a programmer.

When your child learns Python, you might hear them say CRUD. They aren’t swearing; they are talking about the four basic functions of persistence in programming: create, read, update, and delete. Without server-side programming, nothing could be stored in a database for later retrieval and use.

So what sites use Python? It’s everywhere! Google, Instagram, Spotify, Netflix, Uber. The list is endless.

But why is it called Python? Well, the creator, Guido van Rossum, named it after Monty Python because he was reading the scripts from “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” at the time. Your children definitely won’t get the reference, but you can enjoy the sense of humor of the creator.

Coding 101 for the Homeschooling Parent – Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)

There are many different programming languages that are object-oriented – Python is one – but they all fundamentally have the same model: they group related information together and create code that is reusable and well-organized.

Let’s imagine an online shop that sells home goods. One item would be pillows, which would be a class. Many types of pillows are sold in this store, but let’s imagine that all the pillows in this store are made of cotton, which is an attribute of all the pillows. But the pillows have different shapes.  One subclass of pillows might be square, and the other might be rectangular.  And under the square subclass, you might have two objects: throw pillows and floor pillows, and under the rectangular subclass you might have the object bed pillows.

By organizing the data in this way, the subclasses (or child classes) inherit the data from the parent class. The data indicating the cotton material does not have to be duplicated because it’s part of the parent class.

This is the first of the four key components of OOP: inheritance, encapsulation, abstraction, and polymorphism. The data can be grouped so that it can be reused (inheritance), limited in what information is shared (encapsulation), simplified (abstraction), and allow objects to share behaviors (polymorphism).

Object-oriented programming might seem complex, but it’s really an effective method of problem solving that allows for flexibility and reuse of code, and it’s much easier to troubleshoot.

Front end development/Back end development

We’ve already hinted at this a bit so, as you might imagine, front end development is concerned with everything that a user sees and uses to interact with a website, and back end development focuses on the data. A front end developer will use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to design the user interface (UI). A back end developer uses programming languages, like Python, to interact with the database. You might have also heard the term “full stack developer”. Someone in this position feels comfortable doing both.

There are many skill sets that overlap between these two types of development, but generally someone who is more interested in design, creativity, and responsiveness will gravitate toward front end development while someone who likes the complexity of the architecture behind the site will prefer backend development.

Coding 101 for the Homeschooling Parent – API

As we mentioned before, API stands for Application Programming Interfaces, a standard that allows computer programs to communicate and share information. You could take a lot of time to code everything yourself, but an API simplifies the process of accessing data that keeps changing.

There are many web services that share their data via APIs. While planning your vacation, have you ever looked for flights on a site like expedia.com, or searched for hotels on booking.com? Have you ever wondered how those sites managed to show you up-to-the-minute prices and availability? Now you know – they use APIs.

There is a public API for every possible topic. You can program using the NASA API to access Mars Rover photos; the Balldontlie API to access NBA statistics; the Harry Potter API to return spells, sorting hats, and houses; or the Pokemon API for every possible bit of information you could ever need to be a Pokemaster.

By learning Python, using it to connect to other web services with APIs, and building databases, your child will have an amazing coding foundation with endless possibilities.

UI

All of this programming doesn’t matter if the user can’t easily figure out how to use the application, or if they don’t like how it looks. UI is a term you will hear often while your teenager is creating that perfect game. Who wants to play a game that doesn’t have a cool design? UI stands for User Interface and an effective user interface needs to look great and help the users seamlessly navigate the app, game, or website. Creating an application isn’t just about the coding; UI ensures that the function and design work together. UI is an innovative and creative field in the tech industry.

By helping your child learn to code, you’re setting them on a path to build 21st-century skills while encouraging their creativity and pursuit of new interests. They will become excellent problem solvers and have fun while tackling difficult challenges. And now you can follow along and enjoy the process of learning about coding with them.

For more support as your child learns to code, you can enroll your child in CodeWizardsHQ’s online coding classes for kids and feel confident knowing that your child is being taught the skills they need in a fun, engaging way. With their interactive live online coding classes, adding coding to your homeschool curriculum is simple whether you have an elementary, middle, or high school student. They will keep you in the loop with progress reports after every class and support your child with beyond the classroom benefits like live homework help and class recordings.

With this Coding 101 introduction, you can impress your child with your knowledge when you ask them follow-up questions after their lesson. Maybe. It’s not easy to impress a kid, but this is a good start.

Before being published, all products must pass two tests. First, because Common Sense Press knows just how busy a homeschool mom’s life can be, they publish materials that are complete and require a minimum of planning. Second, they believe that education is more than just getting the right answer on a multiple-choice test. Learning should be meaningful, comprehensive, and stimulating to the student.
