Math Galaxy

Math Galaxy

What’s different about Math Galaxy?

  • It’s like having your own personal tutor for K-12 math, guiding you through the exercises at your own pace.
  • It connects the abstract concepts of math to concrete experiences, with graphical illustrations at each step to help you remember.
  • It gives you unlimited practice and detailed explanations.
  • Like Singapore Math it uses block modeling to model procedures, but being digital allows much more flexibility in modeling manipulatives.
  • The secret to learning math is consistency – ten minutes or ten problems a day can lead to significant results if done consistently.
  • Available on iPads, iPhones, android for some apps, plus riddle-based worksheets in the style of Wheel-of-Fortune in eBook form.

“The French mathematician Jacques S. Hadamard found, in a study of 100 leading mathematicians [including Einstein], that the majority of them were primarily visual in their approach.” Scientific American, Sept., 1984, p. 56.

Lumos Learning Review – 4th Grade Math

“This app meets and exceeds its defined objective to help students strengthen math skills. For the content alone, I would highly recommend it to other educators and parents.”

Smart Apps for Kids Review – 5th Grade Math

“For those of you parents out there with younger kids, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Fifth grade is the year when math gets REAL. At least for my fifth grader (and for me) it has been. Prior to this year, I haven’t had any difficulty helping him with his math homework and being able to teach him certain concepts in a way that he can easily understand. I don’t know if [it’s] the math that changed this year, or perhaps it’s the fact that I have a child on the edge of the teenage years, but we seem to have reached a point that (despite the fact that I understand every bit of his math lessons) I seem to be unable to help like I used to. So when I was offered a chance to review 5th Grade Math Common Core I was hoping it would give us a resource to fill the void.”

“I was certainly not disappointed. We have been able to find each and every math concept that we have been presented with this year outlined neatly within this app. Each concept has a review button that can be chosen to see a brief overview of the idea being covered, not to teach the premise but to emphasize the things already being taught in the classroom. Students can then take the next step and work practice problems and answer practice questions to implement the concepts that they just reviewed. With each correct answer, kids can earn points that can be used later on to play games.”

The basic concepts covered are:

  • Numbers in Base 10
  • Fractions
  • Measurement & Data
  • Geometry
  • Algebra

Smart Apps for Kids Review – 6th Grade Math

“Let me tell you, I thought 5th grade math was challenging, and it looks like 6th grade is going to be even more so. But 6th Grade Math Common Core has got us covered, with plenty of the common core math concepts outlined neatly so that we can easily find what we need.”

The basic topics covered are:

  • Ratios & proportions
  • Percents
  • Fractions
  • Multi-digit division
  • Decimal operations
  • Factors
  • Negative numbers
  • Absolute value
  • Exponents
  • Expressions & equations
  • Geometry
  • Statistics & Probability

“Within each of these categories, your young learner will find an even greater breakdown of the concept into more manageable pieces. Each of these smaller sections offers a brief, easy-to-understand overview of the method for review. Users can then practice the concepts with as many practice questions as they desire. With every correct answer, students can earn points to use in the labyrinth game that is built in.”

“My basic testing of this app shows me that it is going to be a valuable resource for us as we enter our sixth grade year. With my son I find that he would much rather practice and/or review his homework lessons on our iPad or computer and I believe this will be one of our go-to tools next year.”

What I liked:

  • The overviews offered are in easy-to-follow formats. The simple descriptions get the ideas across without being overwhelming.
  • Lots of content – I didn’t find any repetition of problems in my testing.
  • Simple-to-use interface

Smart Apps for Kids Review – Fraction & Decimal Riddles

“New Top Pick: Math Galaxy Fraction and Decimal Riddles is a fun way to reinforce math skills.”

“In an unusual move while I was running this app through my typical review motions seeing what it does and where it may need help or where bugs are, my fifth-grade son hovered over my shoulder until he finally asked if he could play. A math app that makes a kid want to do math is a winner in my book and probably yours too.”

“Bottom Line: Fun math apps are always a welcome “addition” to the review pool. This app brings riddles and word jumbles to math exercises making it enjoyable to practice. With 500 riddles and 600 word jumbles, there will be no shortage of practice problems.”
