Discovery Toys

Company Overview

Discovery Toys is the premier learning toy company dedicated to helping children learn and grow through Play. A trusted brand for over 40 years, we specialize in premium quality, kid-powered learning products for newborns through school aged children. We also prioritize a play experience that provides children with the fundamental skills, curiosity and passion that leads to learning success in their school years and beyond.  The company began when an early childhood educator, Lane Nemeth, first brought together a group of dedicated teachers, mothers and parents to take on the important topic of education for children through play. Selling to groups of eager parents in the home, Discovery Toys, the network marketing / direct sales company, was born. Generations later, we continue this tradition with the highest quality Learning through Play products in the market.

Our Products

Discovery Toys products are designed with the understanding that children learn best through hands-on, kid-powered play, as attested over decades by Piaget, Montessori, Peter Gray, and many other child development experts. From birth to school age children learn best through physically interacting with the environment, using all of their senses to build new knowledge.  More recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics reports that child-directed play is fundamentally important for learning 21st century skills, such as problem solving, collaboration, and creativity.1

DT Toys combine multiple levels of learning in every toy, with safety and quality standards beyond the national standards. As many of our customers and Product Advisors can testify, a Discovery Toys product is not a typical educational toy that you can find at your local toy shop. Each Discovery Toys product incorporates multiple “Layers of Learning” to empower the child to grow and advance with the product.  These “Layers of Learning” complement well the scaffolding approach to education, with parents or other adults encouraged through included activity guides to support the development of progressive skills and eventual independent learning.

#1971 MEASURE UP!® CUPS                              #2179 BUSY BUGS

Our Team works carefully with our design and manufacturing partners to incorporate a unique play experience into each of our products, an experience that stimulates multiple centers in the brain simultaneously.  The experience helps to hard-wire into a child’s developing brain the processes the child will use to develop and master skills and to solve problems, including:

  • Early Reasoning
  • Motor Skills
  • Sensory Integration
  • Observation
  • Focus/Listening
  • Cause & Effect
  • Executive Functioning
  • Divergent Thinking
  • Social/Emotional

We also believe that play with Discovery Toys products will instill curiosity, invite collaboration, and foster a love of learning.  Our hope is to help each child develop the fundamental skills and passion for future learning success and for innovative thinking.

From the very beginning of our company, our product focus has been on the Process, not the Content.  We believe it is more important for a child to learn the skills and processes he or she will need to be a successful learner in later years.  Our approach has been validated with this 2018 recommendation from the American Academy of Pediatrics: Instead of focusing solely on academic skills, such as reciting the alphabet, early literacy, using flash cards, engaging with computer toys, and teaching to tests, cultivating the joy of learning through play is likely to better encourage long-term academic success.2

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”

– Ignacio Estrada

Making a difference in the lives of children by providing them with the gift of Learning and Growing through Play is central to our mission at Discovery Toys.

Special Needs Community

The multi-sensory, layered learning approach incorporated into our products has proved beneficial to children and adults with special needs and learning challenges.  For decades, physical, occupational, behavioral, and speech therapists have recommended Discovery Toys products to their client families. Many of these therapists have joined the Discovery Toys family as Play Advisors, sharing and selling our products to others.  We have a Special Needs Toy Guide available, with recommended products grouped by select skill categories.

Our products have proved especially attractive to therapists and families with children with Autism.  The Princeton Child Institute helped us to develop a set of Autism Symbols that correspond with the specific learning each of our toys supports.  These symbols can be found in our annual catalog and in our on-line store to help parents select appropriate products to support their child’s development.  The past couple of years Autism Live has bestowed their “Top Toy Award” on a number of our toys and featured them on their on-line broadcast.

Wings to Soar Online Academy

Many parents homeschool because their child has special needs. Homeschooling may be the best setting if traditional school has not met their needs well. Wings to Soar Online Academy equips and empowers your child with special needs to thrive.

Are you looking for homeschooling programs for a child with special needs? Or are they outside-the-box in their learning style? Do you have concerns about your child’s learning? Need after-school intervention? Whether your child with special needs has an official diagnosis, Wings to Soar Online Academy can help.

Don’t try to recreate school at home. Most struggling learners don’t do well with a pre-packaged curriculum that comes in a box. Most students have a wide range of skill levels within themselves. They don’t fit into a grade level curriculum.

That’s why Wings to Soar Online Academy creates a Path to Success Personalized Learning Plan for each student. Start with requesting free Just-Right Level Assessments. This allows them to start each student at their own Just-Right Level in each skill strand.

Wings to Soar Online Academy specializes in empowering dyslexics and other outside-the-box learners. They offer personalized education through online learning. They partner with parents in 34 US states and 10 foreign countries.

As you search for solutions to help your child, know that “perfect course” may not be the solution for your child. Academic courses are tools, not solutions to learning challenges. Course content and structure should always be your servant and your guide. It should not be your taskmaster. You are teaching a child, not a curriculum. Move as slow as needed, but fast as they are ready in each moment.

That’s how Wings to Soar Online Academy sees curriculum and courses. They meet each child where they are in their development. The child’s needs guide them. They start with what’s working and come alongside you to help with the things that aren’t.

What sets Wings to Soar Online Academy apart is that they

  • Investigate your child’s learning gaps
  • Compile a picture of your child’s strengths and challenges
  • Create a personalized learning plan to fill those gaps
  • Deliver high-interest content
  • Coach parents how to continue the skills we teach
  • Move your child forward through specialized instruction, intervention, individual attention, and accountability.

Wings to Soar Online Academy staff are passionate about empowering dyslexics and other outside-the-box learners. They help them gain the skills and confidence to not just survive but thrive in school and in life. They do this through their whole-person, personalized approach to education.

Wings to Soar helps outside-the-box learners break the chains of shame, failure, and inadequacy that so often surround learning challenges. They empower outside-the-box learners to become the best versions of themselves. They help them embrace their unique wiring and its flip-side strengths. While they specialize in dyslexia intervention, they love helping families thrive.

    • This link summarizes their intervention programs. It also includes a few of their more popular packages.
    • Weekly and quarterly reports add outside accountability.

  • Self-Paced Video-Based Courses
    • All academic areas K to 12th-grade level.
    • You can add science, social studies, math, cognitive skills intervention, and electives.

    • Office hours available for extra help when needed.
    • Choose whether you’d like a report and their teacher’s eyes on your child’s work quarterly, weekly, or daily.
  • Small group webcam classes They’ve designed these courses with students with language-based learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, in mind. They further personalize to the needs of each student’s special needs. Wings to Soar creates stronger, more confident learners.
    • Just-Right Writing Intervention for 4th-12th-grade age students (3 l3vels)
      • Part of the weekly live online class is for students to learn the writing and learning process.
